If Dragon's Rage targets a unit and location, but Flash is used to move all units off the destination battlefield before Dragon's Rage resolves, does the reflexive trigger still happen and can the attacking player score by conquering the now-empty battlefield?

Answer

Ruling: Dragon's Rage requires declaring both a target unit and destination location before responses. If Flash removes all units from the destination before Dragon's Rage resolves, the targeted unit still moves to that location, but the reflexive trigger does not occur (no valid target for damage). This ends the chain and starts a non-combat showdown. If you conquer the battlefield and haven't scored there this turn, you score a point.

Sequence:

  • Dragon's Rage is cast with target unit and destination declared
  • Opponent responds with Flash, moving units off the destination battlefield
  • Dragon's Rage resolves, moving the targeted unit to the (now empty) destination
  • Reflexive trigger does not occur (no valid target at destination)
  • Chain ends, non-combat showdown begins
  • If conquering and no prior score this turn, score a point

Nuances:

  • Control of a battlefield can change when it's not Contested (no opposing units present)
  • Showdowns cannot occur while a chain is resolving
