If my opponent plays ride the wind, and I play a discipline, if my opponent passes priority can I react to my discipline with a defy to defy the ride the wind before the spells have resolved?

Answer

Yes — you can Defy Ride the Wind before it resolves, but the timing depends on whether you've already passed priority.

After your Discipline is finalized, you control the newest item on the chain, so you gain priority (Rule 312.2.c). While you hold that priority you may immediately play Defy targeting Ride the Wind, making the chain: Ride the Wind → Discipline → Defy. Defy resolves first and counters Ride the Wind; Discipline then resolves and draws your card.

If you instead pass and your opponent passes, both players have passed in sequence, so Discipline resolves first — you can't insert Defy above it at that point (Rule 339.1). However, after Discipline resolves, a fresh priority window opens before Ride the Wind resolves, and you can play Defy then, still countering Ride the Wind before it takes effect (FAQ #718). Either way, Ride the Wind is stopped; you just can't put Defy above Discipline once everyone has passed.
