Snapshotting is Riftbound's rule that a non-passive effect's numbers are locked in ("remembered") at the moment the effect applies — they don't re-evaluate later.

Rule 477.3.b: when an arithmetic effect that isn't a passive ability has a limitation (like a min/max or a target's current Might), that limitation is snapshotted at the time of application and kept at that level for the whole duration. Example: "-4 Might to a min of 1" on a 2-Might unit becomes a permanent (for the duration) -1, not a fluctuating -4 that re-checks.

Two key corollaries:

  • Passive abilities do NOT snapshot — they re-evaluate continuously ("Units you control here have 5 Might" stays live).
  • Spells/abilities DO snapshot at resolution — effects only apply to what's present when the spell resolves, and numbers are fixed then; things entering play later during the duration are not affected (FAQ #7876). This also interacts with layers: increases apply before decreases (477.3.e), each with their own snapshotted limitations.
