If Yasuo enters an open battlefield and the opponent reacts with Ride the Wind to enter the same battlefield, does Yasuo's ability trigger or fail because there was no target when it was initially played?

Answer

Ruling: If Yasuo is contesting a battlefield and an enemy unit moves or is played there, Yasuo becomes an attacker and his ability triggers. You only become the attacker when combat starts, which happens after the opponent's unit arrives.

Sequence:

  • If opponent uses Ride the Wind before Yasuo actually moves, they apply contested status first and Yasuo will not be the attacker
  • If opponent uses Ride the Wind after Yasuo is already contesting the battlefield, combat is staged, Yasuo is designated as attacker, and his "when I attack" ability triggers

Nuances:

  • The timing of when Ride the Wind is used matters - whether it's reacting before Yasuo moves or during the showdown's first focus
  • Similar to Assault, the ability only activates when there is an enemy unit present
