If I use Ride the Wind to move a unit to a battlefield during my opponent's turn in response to them triggering a showdown, and I win that showdown, do I gain a point for conquering or just for holding?

Answer

Ruling: You gain a point for conquering because you establish control of a battlefield you have not yet scored that turn.

Sequence:

  • Opponent moves a unit to an open battlefield, triggering showdown
  • You use Ride the Wind (an Action) to move Volibear to that battlefield during the showdown
  • After the showdown resolves, if your units remain at the battlefield and you don't already control it, you establish control
  • Since you have not yet scored that battlefield this turn (it's your opponent's turn), this counts as a Conquer

Nuances:

  • This works because Ride the Wind is an Action, so it can be played during your opponent's turn
  • You become the Defender in the showdown even though you didn't have units there at the start
  • The key rule is that establishing control results in a Conquer if you haven't scored that battlefield yet this turn
