When Fiora (Spiritforged) attacks one-on-one and her might doubles from her triggered ability, if she is then buffed or debuffed with a spell during the showdown, does her might recalculate based on the doubled value or the original value? Also, if Fiora attacks with another unit (not one-on-one), then that unit is removed and she returns to the battlefield, does her ability trigger?

Answer

Ruling: Fiora's ability is a triggered ability that snapshots her might when the trigger resolves (when she becomes an attacker/defender in a one-on-one situation). Buffs or debuffs applied after the trigger resolves will modify the already-doubled value. Only reactions can be played to boost her might after the trigger goes on the chain; otherwise, might must be added before entering combat.

Sequence:

  • Fiora becomes an attacker in a one-on-one combat
  • Her attack trigger goes on the chain
  • The trigger resolves, doubling her current might at that moment
  • Any subsequent buffs/debuffs modify the doubled value
  • Only reactions can affect her might after the trigger is on the chain

Nuances:

  • Attack triggers only happen the first time a unit gains the attacker designation during a combat, so if Fiora attacks with another unit (not triggering because it's not one-on-one), then that unit is removed, her trigger will NOT activate when she becomes one-on-one later in that same combat
  • The rules regarding attack triggers with additional conditions (like "when I attack one-on-one") are unclear and may need clarification/errata
  • Equipment works particularly well with Fiora since it provides permanent might increases that are in place before the trigger resolves
