If I play Ride the Wind to move a unit to an empty battlefield after my opponent killed my unit with a spell, does it count as conquering?

Answer

Ruling: You can conquer the battlefield only if you gain control of it (meaning you didn't have control when you moved your unit there) AND you haven't scored that battlefield this turn yet.

Sequence:

  • Determine if you lost control of the battlefield before moving your unit back
  • If your unit was killed outside of combat, you lose control immediately
  • If your unit was killed during combat, you only lose control when combat ends
  • If you didn't have control when Ride the Wind resolves, moving your unit there gains control
  • If you gain control and haven't scored that battlefield this turn, you conquer it

Nuances:

  • If the opponent initiates combat, kills your unit with a spell during combat, and you Ride the Wind in response, you still have control because combat hasn't ended yet, so you cannot conquer
  • During an opponent's turn, you very likely haven't scored that battlefield yet, but this must still be verified
