Answer

Ruling: Riftbound's chain works like MTG's stack. A player can play multiple reactions before passing priority to their opponent, but once they pass priority and the opponent also passes, the chain begins resolving.

Sequence:

  • Player A plays a reaction spell and can either pass priority or play additional reactions
  • If Player A plays multiple reactions before passing, they all go on the chain
  • Once Player A passes priority, Player B can respond or pass
  • If both players pass priority consecutively, the chain resolves
  • After the most recent item on the chain resolves, there is another round of priority (controller of the most recent item gets priority first)
  • Once the chain fully resolves in showdown, the next relevant player gains focus to start a new chain

Nuances:

  • If Player A plays a spell and passes priority, they cannot react again before that spell resolves if everyone else passes
  • Actions cannot be played while there is an open chain
  • Focus (who can start a chain in showdown) is different from priority (who can respond during an open chain)
  • Focus stays the same during an open chain regardless of what happens
