When Tideturner's ability moves both itself and a target unit, do they move simultaneously (using 'AND'), or does control of the battlefield get checked between the movements?

Answer

Ruling: Tideturner moves both units simultaneously because the ability uses 'AND' rather than 'THEN', so control of the battlefield is not lost between the movements.

Nuances:

  • The errata to Tideturner requires it to be at a different location than the target unit, which affects certain combo plays
  • The rules around when control is lost when a battlefield becomes empty mid-resolution are currently unclear and will be addressed in a future comprehensive rules update
  • If the ability used 'THEN' instead of 'AND', the question of whether control would be lost between movements would be more complex under current rules
