If Tryndamere's controller attacks units with enough excess damage to trigger his ability but doesn't verbally announce or assign the excess damage, does the trigger still happen and grant the point?

Answer

Ruling: You must assign all damage including excess damage - you cannot choose not to overdamage. If Tryndamere has at least 5 excess damage after assigning lethal to all defending units, the trigger condition is met and the point should be granted.

Sequence:

  • Sum up all attacking units' might
  • Assign damage to defending units until each reaches lethal
  • Any remaining damage beyond lethal to all units is excess damage
  • Excess damage is automatically assigned to the last unit
  • If 5+ excess damage exists, Tryndamere's trigger condition is met

Nuances:

  • Whether a player who forgets to announce or take the point from the trigger can claim it retroactively depends on competitive penalty guidelines that don't yet exist
  • The trigger itself is not optional - the condition is automatically met when 5+ excess damage occurs
  • In casual play, the point should be given even if not announced
