Answer

Ruling: When Snapvine targets an enemy unit with its ability, you must pay Deflect costs because the ability targets the unit. However, Unyielding Spirit does not prevent the damage because Snapvine's ability instructs Snapvine itself to deal the damage ("I/we deal damage"), not the ability directly dealing damage.

Sequence:

  • Snapvine's ability targets the enemy unit
  • Deflect cost must be paid due to targeting
  • The ability then instructs Snapvine and the targeted unit to deal damage to each other
  • The damage is dealt by Snapvine (the unit), not by the ability itself

Nuances:

  • The distinction is between abilities that say "deal damage" (ability deals damage directly, can be blocked by Unyielding Spirit) versus "I/we deal damage" (unit deals damage, cannot be blocked by Unyielding Spirit)
  • This same principle applies to other units like Caitlyn, who deals damage based on might but can have it blocked when the ability directly deals the damage
