Can players play spells before a Showdown happens?
verified
Answer
Ruling: If a unit moves to a battlefield without any move triggers, you cannot play anything before the showdown starts. However, if there are any triggers, players can react with reactions pre-showdown. The turn player can also play cards before they move anywhere to start a showdown.
Sequence:
- Turn player may play cards before moving to initiate showdown
- Unit moves to battlefield
- If move triggers exist, players can play reactions before showdown
- If no move triggers exist, showdown starts immediately with no opportunity to play cards
Nuances:
- Only reactions can be played in response to move triggers, not normal spells
- The timing depends on whether the move generates any triggers
