Answer

Ruling: Yes, Player B gains a point for the Conquer. The defending player scores when they establish control after combat, even though they were not the player who applied Contested first.

Sequence:

  • Player A moves to empty battlefield and applies Contested first
  • Player B moves unit to battlefield during Showdown, becoming defender
  • Combat resolves and B's unit survives
  • B establishes control over the battlefield
  • B scores a point via Conquer

Nuances:

  • Rule 440.2.b explicitly states establishing control does not have to be the player that applied Contested to the battlefield
  • Rule 442.1.b appears to contradict this but is likely a wording issue
  • This ruling has been confirmed multiple times by Rioters
