If you use Ezreal's signature spell on one of your units at a battlefield, can you play it again at that same battlefield, or does it have to be played back at base?

Answer

Ruling: You can play the unit back to the same battlefield if you still control that battlefield after the unit is banished. You can only play units to locations you control unless the unit has special allowances.

Sequence:

  • The spell banishes the unit from the battlefield
  • If you lose control of the battlefield when the unit is banished, you cannot play it back there
  • If you maintain control of the battlefield, you can play the unit back there

Nuances:

  • If you have only one unit at a battlefield and use the spell on it, you will lose control of the battlefield before the unit finalizes (unless you are the defender in combat and control the battlefield)
  • If you have multiple units at a battlefield, you can use the spell on one unit and play it back to the same battlefield because you never lost control
  • Losing control of a battlefield this way can sometimes be beneficial, such as allowing you to conquer during your enemy's turn
