When you play a spell, when does it register in the discard pile - upon resolution or upon reveal after cost is paid?

Answer

Ruling: A spell enters the discard pile just before resolution, as part of the resolution process itself.

Sequence:

  • Finalize the chain item
  • Execute the card's instructions
  • Place the card in the trash/discard pile
  • Consider it resolved/played

Nuances:

  • The placement in discard happens during the "R" (Resolve) step of FEPR (Finalize, Execute, Pass, Resolve), which is the process for resolving chain items
  • The card goes to discard after executing its instructions but as part of the same resolution step
