Why does the new cleanup rule trigger at so many more points compared to the old rule, and what problems does this solve?

Answer

Ruling: The new cleanup rules trigger more frequently to ensure the game state is always properly checked and resolved, fixing edge cases where the old rules allowed units to survive when they shouldn't or prevented proper sequencing of effects during resolution.

Sequence:

  • Cleanup now occurs when a Pending Item becomes Legal on the Chain
  • Then cleanup occurs again after the Chain Item is removed
  • This ensures proper checking between paying costs and resolution

Nuances:

  • The new rules fix the "Call to Glory" + buffed Sett scenario: if Sett has 5 might (4 base + 1 buff) with 4 damage, and you use Call to Glory removing the buff to give +3 might to himself, he dies during the cleanup that occurs when his status changes
  • The new rules fix issues with Disintegrate without needing errata, since dealing damage changes the status of a Game Object and triggers cleanup
  • The monastery + Void Seeker + buffed Sett scenario is now properly handled: you can't spend Sett's buff and then use monastery's effect because cleanup happens when the buff is removed
  • The frequent cleanups address the core issue that "lethal damage doesn't kill immediately" under old rules
