Answer

Ruling: You can alter cards by painting/drawing on an existing card you own, but the art must remain recognizably similar to the original card, with name and cost still visible. Completely replacing the art with different artwork (even of the same character) is risky and likely not allowed, as the art must be recognizable as the specific card.

Sequence:

  • Start with an original copy of the card you want to alter
  • Modify the card through painting/drawing (such as extending art)
  • Ensure the art remains recognizably similar to the original
  • Keep name and cost visible

Nuances:

  • Head judges may ban all custom cards at their discretion, so always bring backup copies
  • Changing art to a different version of the same character (like a different Ahri skin) is problematic when multiple cards feature that character, as opponents need to identify which specific card it is without picking it up
  • Some judges might be more lenient (RAI approach) but the strict reading (RAW) would likely disallow significant art changes
  • You must use an original card as the base for any alteration
