Are Attack/Defend triggers added to chains based on turn order, and is distributing damage a game action that should follow turn order?

Answer

Ruling: Combat showdown is an exception to the general turn order rule. The attacker puts their triggers on the chain first and gets priority/focus first, even though the general rule 503.2.a would suggest using turn order for simultaneous actions.

Sequence:

  • Attacker puts "When I attack" triggers on the Initial Chain first
  • Defender puts "When I defend" triggers on the Initial Chain second
  • Attacker distributes damage first
  • Defender distributes damage second

Nuances:

  • Rule 625.1.c defines a specific order for combat triggers, which exempts it from the general simultaneous action rule 503.2.a
  • The CRD will be updated to clarify this exception
