If a player moves their only attacking unit to a different battlefield during a Combat Showdown (using Ride the Wind), does that player gain control of the new battlefield when the original showdown ends, even before the Staged Showdown on the new battlefield resolves?

Answer

Ruling: No, you can only gain control of the battlefield where the showdown actually happened and resolved. Control is not granted to a different battlefield just because a showdown ended elsewhere.

Sequence:

  • P2 contests BF1 and uses Ride the Wind to move their attacking unit to BF2 during Combat Showdown
  • A Staged Showdown is created on BF2 (with Contested status applied)
  • The Combat Showdown on BF1 ends and P1 retains control (P2 has no unit there)
  • P2 does not gain control of BF2 at this point
  • The Staged Showdown on BF2 then processes normally

Nuances:

  • The general explanation of control gain applies specifically to the battlefield where the showdown occurred, not to other battlefields where units may have moved during the showdown
  • The wording could be clearer to explicitly state this limitation
