When a buffed Sett in base uses its buff to gain +4 might and the opponent responds with Smokescreen, what is the resolution order and outcome? Does the outcome change if Sett had received 1 damage previously?

Answer

Ruling: Sett's ability and Smokescreen both go on the chain, with Smokescreen resolving first (giving -4 might, snapshotting Sett at 1 might), then Sett's ability resolves (giving +4 might, snapshotting at 5 might). Sett survives at 5 might.

Sequence:

  • Pay the cost for Sett's ability
  • Sett's ability goes on the chain
  • Smokescreen is added to the chain
  • Smokescreen resolves first: gives -4 might, snapshots Sett's might at 1
  • Sett's ability resolves: gives +4 might, snapshots might at 5

Nuances:

  • If Sett had received 1 damage before this sequence, he would be killed during cleanup after Smokescreen resolves, because he would have 1 damage marked and his might would be 1 at that point
