Answer

Ruling: The opponent must flip Zhonya's before the third trigger resolves to save the unit. If they flip it after the third trigger resolves, the unit dies and Zhonya's goes to trash (assuming it's the only unit at that battlefield).

Sequence:

  • Icathian Rain targets the unit 3 times
  • Before the third trigger resolves: opponent can flip Zhonya's to save the unit and clear all damage
  • After the third trigger resolves: the unit dies, and if Zhonya's wasn't flipped, it goes to trash during cleanup

Nuances:

  • If there are multiple units at the battlefield, Zhonya's can be flipped after the unit dies (it won't save that unit but won't go to trash)
  • During combat showdowns specifically, hidden cards remain even after all defending units die, so Zhonya's could be flipped after death to move it to base
  • This Icathian Rain scenario is NOT a combat showdown, so normal battlefield control rules apply
