Can you conquer/hold and trigger conquer/hold effects on Forgotten Monument during the first turns when it says 'Players can't score here', or does it prevent conquering/holding entirely?

Answer

Ruling: Players cannot conquer or hold Forgotten Monument during the turns when "Players can't score here" is active. This prevents both gaining points AND triggering conquer/hold effects.

Sequence:

  • Players can still move units to Forgotten Monument and gain control of it
  • However, gaining control does not result in a conquer because scoring is prevented
  • Since conquering and holding are forms of scoring, they cannot occur when scoring is prevented
  • Therefore, no conquer/hold effects trigger during this period

Nuances:

  • This differs from effects like Tianna Crownguard which say "can't score points" - those prevent gaining points but still allow conquer/hold effects to trigger per rule 376.4.b.2.c/376.4.c.2.c
  • The distinction is: "can't score" prevents the entire scoring action (conquering/holding), while "can't score points" only prevents the point gain portion
  • Players can still gain control of the battlefield without conquering it (control and conquer are not the same thing)
  • Effects that score points through other mechanisms (like Yasuo Windrider's third move or purple Draven's death trigger) would still work since they don't score the battlefield itself
  • After the restriction period ends (turn 3+), normal scoring rules apply
