When a spell is countered (e.g., by Wind Wall), does it count as 'played' for the purposes of triggering abilities like Legion?

Answer

Ruling: A countered spell is not considered 'played'. In Riftbound, 'played' essentially means 'resolved'. However, the player who cast the countered spell still must pay all costs.

Sequence:

  • Player pays costs for the spell
  • Spell is countered
  • Spell is not considered 'played' (did not resolve)
  • Abilities that trigger when cards are 'played' (like Legion) do not trigger

Nuances:

  • Costs are paid regardless of whether the spell is countered
  • Only resolved spells count as 'played'
