Do spells and effects that require a target at a battlefield still resolve if the target is no longer at a battlefield at time of resolution?

Answer

Ruling: If the target is no longer valid at resolution (such as being returned to base), that part of the ability/spell has no effect.

Sequence:

  • Target is declared when spell/ability is played
  • Target check occurs before resolution
  • If target is no longer valid, the effect resolves with no effect

Nuances:

  • This applies to both spells (like Hextech Ray) and play abilities (like Carnivorous Snapvine)
  • Returning a unit to base with Flash in response makes it an invalid target
