Can Wind Wall target itself as the spell to be countered, and if so, would Ravenbloom Student get +1 Might from the resolution?

Answer

Ruling: Wind Wall can target itself because it moves onto the Chain before targets are declared, making it a valid target for itself. However, Ravenbloom Student would not get +1 Might because a card that is Countered is not considered to have been played.

Sequence:

  • Wind Wall is put onto the Chain
  • Targets are declared (Wind Wall can target itself as it's now a spell on the Chain)
  • Wind Wall resolves and counters itself
  • Ravenbloom Student does not trigger because countered cards are not considered played

Nuances:

  • This interaction is mostly irrelevant in practice but could be used to put a spell in your trash
  • The rule preventing deterministically illegal choices does not apply here because the targeting is not deterministically illegal
  • Magic has a separate rule prohibiting self-targeting, but Riftbound does not have an analogous rule
