When an opponent plays Falling Star targeting multiple units, how should they communicate the order of triggers, and how can I get them to specify the order without revealing I have a Hidden Zhonya's?

Answer

Ruling: When Falling Star resolves, the player must declare which units the triggers are targeting and communicate what order the triggers will happen in (either which goes on the chain last or which resolves first).

Sequence:

  • Player casts Falling Star
  • Player must specify targets and order (e.g., "3 to X then 3 to Y")
  • Triggers go on chain in declared order
  • Opponent can respond with cards like Zhonya's

Nuances:

  • Players should be declaring this order by default when casting Falling Star
  • If order is unclear or not communicated, you should ask for clarification to avoid miscommunication
  • To avoid revealing information, ask for clear trigger ordering every time they cast Falling Star (not just when you have a response), so they learn to play correctly and you don't telegraph when you have relevant cards
  • If a player deliberately avoids providing clear representation of their triggers, you can call a judge
  • If they say "targeting X and Y" without specifying order, you can make an assumption based on the order stated, but this risks miscommunication
