If someone uses Defy on a Get Excited, do you still have to discard first? When does targeting happen when playing a spell?

Answer

Ruling: Discard 1 is not a cost on Get Excited, so you discard at spell resolution. If the spell is countered, you won't discard. Targeting happens when the spell goes on the chain, and you must declare which unit you want to target at that time.

Sequence:

  • Get Excited goes on the chain
  • Declare target unit
  • If countered (e.g., by Defy), spell does not resolve and you do not discard
  • If not countered, spell resolves and you discard 1 card

Nuances:

  • You can discard Immortal Phoenix to Get Excited and then trigger the Phoenix to play it (since discard happens at resolution)
