Does 'cannot score points' (like Tianna Crownguard) prevent only gaining points, or does it also prevent conquer/hold effects and the final point card draw replacement?

Answer

Ruling: 'Cannot score points' effects only prevent the actual gaining of points. They do not prevent conquer/hold effects from triggering, and they do not prevent drawing a card instead of scoring the final point when at 7 points.

Nuances:

  • This applies to cards like Tianna Crownguard that say "cannot score points"
  • Forgotten Monument (which says "can't score" without "points") is expected to receive errata, as its current wording suggests it should block more than just points, but the FAQ ruling treats it the same as Tianna
  • The Chinese and English card wordings are inverted - Forgotten Monument uses "gain points" language in Chinese while Tianna uses "score" language, opposite of the English versions
  • If you hold/conquer a battlefield with a "cannot score points" effect active, you still get conquer/hold triggered abilities
  • Trinity Force's effect that tells you to "score" a point is blocked by Tianna, as it attempts to use Rule 448.1 which Tianna prevents
