If you retreat a unit twice while holding priority, does the second retreat still grant the rune channel when it resolves after the unit is already in hand?

Answer

Ruling: When the second retreat resolves, the card is already in a private knowledge area (your hand), so the game cannot verify the owner of the card. Therefore, you do not get the rune from the second retreat.

Sequence:

  • First retreat is placed on the stack
  • Second retreat is placed on the stack (holding priority)
  • Second retreat resolves first, moving the unit to hand and granting rune
  • First retreat resolves, but cannot find the card to verify owner, so no rune is granted

Nuances:

  • The distinction between "owner" and "controller" is important for control changes during play, but owner cannot be tracked once a card moves to a private knowledge area
