Answer

Ruling: Before Sett's ability resolves, he has 1 might (4 base + 1 from buff - 4 from Smokescreen). After his ability resolves, he has 4 might (4 base + 4 from ability - 4 from Smokescreen). Smokescreen's reduction is locked in when it resolves based on current might at that time.

Sequence:

  • Smokescreen resolves, reducing Sett's might by 4 (his current might at resolution)
  • Sett's ability is activated, paying the cost (removing the buff)
  • Between paying the cost and ability resolving, Sett is at 0 might (4 base - 4 from Smokescreen)
  • Sett's ability resolves, granting +4 might
  • Final might is 4 (4 base + 4 from ability - 4 from Smokescreen)

Nuances:

  • If Sett had 4 damage instead of Smokescreen, he would temporarily be at 0 might with 4 damage after paying the buff cost, but before his ability resolves. No cleanup happens until an item on the chain resolves, so he wouldn't die if nothing else happens. However, if the opponent reacts with any reaction-speed ability or spell, a cleanup will happen before Sett gets +4 might and he'll die.
