When Akshan steals an enemy equipment and attaches it to himself, then Jax moves that equipment to another friendly unit, what happens to the equipment when Akshan dies? Does it stay attached to the other unit even though control returns to the opponent?

Answer

Ruling: When Akshan dies, you lose control of the stolen equipment, but it remains attached to the unit Jax moved it to and stays at your base. Attached cards can have different controllers from their top-most card, and changes in control of the top-most card do not impact control of attached cards.

Nuances:

  • A card you control does not have to be in your base/board zone - control and location are separate concepts
  • The equipment can return to the opponent's board when they play an effect that detaches and reattaches it to their own unit (like Weaponmaster)
  • If the unit with the attached equipment dies at a battlefield, the equipment will be recalled back to its owner's (Player B's) base during cleanup, since attached cards detach when the top-most card changes zones and a gear present at a battlefield gets recalled
