When two yellow Leonas attack Deadbloom (which has deflect), do you pay deflect twice for each Leona stun, or only once since you cannot stun the same target twice?

Answer

Ruling: You must pay deflect twice. Both Leona effects trigger simultaneously and must each target a unit when put on the chain, which is when deflect costs are paid. Even though a unit can't be stunned twice, it can still be selected as a target for stunning effects. The first stun resolves normally, and the second stun resolves but does nothing since the unit is already stunned.

Sequence:

  • Both Leona effects trigger at the same time
  • Both must select Deadbloom as target and pay deflect when putting effects on the chain
  • First Leona effect resolves, stunning Deadbloom and triggering Leona Legend
  • Second Leona effect resolves, doing nothing since Deadbloom is already stunned

Nuances:

  • Even when there is only one legal target, you are still "choosing" and "targeting" that unit according to the FAQ
  • A stunned unit can be a valid target for additional stun effects, even though the effect does nothing
  • You only get one Leona Legend buff because only one stun counter was actually added
  • If you cannot pay the deflect cost, the effect cannot be put on the chain
  • Note: This ruling was later changed in a rules update where triggered abilities that incur a cost when put on the chain may now be refused
