If Zhonya is already equipped as a gear in base, can I choose which unit to save when my opponent uses Falling Star or Singularity to target 2 different units?

Answer

Ruling: With Singularity, you can choose which unit to save because the 2x unit damage resolves as 1 trigger. With Falling Star, you cannot choose - Zhonya will automatically save whichever unit dies to the first trigger, and you cannot decline to use the gear to try and save the second unit.

Sequence:

  • Falling Star creates 2 separate reflective triggers that resolve one by one
  • Zhonya saves the unit that dies to the first trigger
  • You cannot decline using Zhonya on the first trigger to save the second unit instead

Nuances:

  • Singularity's 2x unit damage counts as a single trigger, allowing choice between units
  • Falling Star's triggers are separate and sequential, preventing choice
