Ruling: Rules as Written (RAW), the Golden Rule would still apply and card text would override even rules that say "for any reason". However, Rules as Intended (RAI), "for any reason" is meant to override the Golden Rule, and in practice this situation should never occur because no cards should create effects that violate "for any reason" restrictions.

Nuances:

  • If you encounter a situation where a card effect seems to violate a "for any reason" rule, an error has likely been made in gameplay
  • The specific example of cards being put into another player's banishment zone should never happen in actual play
