If you retreat as a defender from Reaver's Row (leaving the battlefield empty), can you then use Ride the Wind to return to that battlefield and score a point by killing the opponent's units?

Answer

Ruling: Yes, you can score in this scenario. If you fully leave the battlefield (losing control), then return and gain control during the same showdown, you can score as long as you haven't already scored that round.

Sequence:

  • Retreat as defender from Reaver's Row, leaving no units on the battlefield
  • You lose control of the battlefield
  • Use Ride the Wind to return to the battlefield as an action
  • If you kill opponent's units and gain control, you score
  • You remain the "defender" throughout this showdown, but this doesn't prevent scoring

Nuances:

  • The attacker/defender tags persist throughout the entire showdown, even if you leave and return
  • Scoring is based on gaining control of a battlefield you didn't control (even momentarily), not on attacker/defender status
  • You can only score once per round per battlefield
  • This interaction may receive clarification in updated comprehensive rules regarding exactly when control is lost
