When Ravenbloom (Student) is moved, Player B responds with Hextech, and Player A plays two Retreats on the same minion, does Ravenbloom create a new chain after each spell resolves or does it create two pending abilities that stack after Hextech?

Answer

Ruling: Ravenbloom's trigger creates a new pending ability each time a spell is played, which are added to the chain during resolution. The chain does not empty between these triggers.

Sequence:

  • Hextech is played
  • First Retreat is played in response
  • Second Retreat is played in response
  • Second Retreat resolves, triggering Student (Ravenbloom)
  • First Retreat resolves, triggering Student again
  • Hextech resolves
  • Chain is empty

Nuances:

  • Players pass priority (not focus) while the chain is not empty
  • Each spell played triggers Ravenbloom separately, creating individual trigger instances that resolve between the spells
