Can I rewind my move if I didn't take any other actions since the move?

Whether you can rewind a move depends on the context of your game, specifically whether you are playing in a casual setting or a formal tournament:

  • In Casual Play: Usually, players agree on reasonable take-backs if no significant information has been revealed or game states altered by subsequent actions.
  • In Competition (Rule 509): The ability to reverse a move depends on the "Level of Organized Play" (OPL):
    • At Low OPL (Rule 509.3): You can reverse your most recent action (including a move) and make a different decision, provided that no new action has been taken by either player.
    • At High OPL (Rule 509.4): You can reverse your most recent action (such as moving a unit to a specific location) immediately after communicating it, provided no new action has been taken by either player (Rule 509.4.c).

Critical Restrictions:

  1. No New Actions: You cannot rewind if any new action has been taken by you or your opponent (Rule 509.3, 509.4).
  2. No Angle Shooting: You cannot reverse a decision based on your opponent’s reaction or to gain information you didn't have before (Rule 509.5).
  3. Pace of Play: You must still maintain an appropriate pace of play; you cannot use the ability to reverse actions as a way to slow down the game (Rule 509.6).

If you are in a competition, ensure you communicate your intention to reverse the move immediately. If you are uncertain about the specific tournament level or if a situation is borderline, it is best to call a judge.
