Can I use Emperors Divide to defend myself from Unchecked Power?
Yes, you can use Emperor's Divide to protect your units from Unchecked Power.
Why this works
- Unchecked Power is a spell. When played, it creates a chain (Rule 342.1).
- While the chain is open/resolving, Emperor's Divide can be played as a reaction (if it was previously hidden) or as an action (if the game state permits, such as during a showdown or when you have priority).
- Because the chain resolves in Last-In, First-Out (LIFO) order:
- Emperor's Divide (the most recently played item) resolves first. It moves your units from the battlefield to your base.
- Unchecked Power then resolves. Since your units are no longer at the battlefield (having moved to your base), they are no longer subject to the damage effect.
Important Notes
- Targeting: Per RiftJudge FAQ #8796, Emperor's Divide involves choosing. You choose which specific units to move when you place the spell on the chain.
- State of Units: Per RiftJudge FAQ #9814, moving units with Emperor's Divide does not change their state (i.e., if they were ready, they remain ready; if exhausted, they remain exhausted).
- Timing: To use this successfully, you must play Emperor's Divide while Unchecked Power is still on the chain (i.e., before Unchecked Power resolves). Once Unchecked Power resolves and deals its damage, it is too late to move your units.
