Does your defense trigger or attack trigger go first?

During a combat showdown, Attack triggers are added to the chain first, followed by Defend triggers. Because the chain resolves in a Last-In, First-Out (LIFO) manner, the Defend triggers will resolve first.

According to RiftJudge FAQ #9049 and Rule 459.2.d.1, the sequence for placing these triggered abilities on the initial combat chain is as follows:

  1. Attacker adds their triggers to the chain first.
  2. Other non-defender players (in turn order) add their triggers.
  3. Defender adds their triggers to the chain last.

Since the last item added to the chain is the first to resolve (LIFO), the Defender’s triggers resolve before the Attacker’s triggers.

Important Notes:

  • Priority: Because the Defender adds their triggers to the chain last, they become the controller of the last link on the chain and will receive priority first (Rule 312.2.c).
  • Simultaneous triggers: If multiple triggers occur for a single player, that player chooses the order in which they are added to the chain (Rule 383.3.d).
