If my sprite has been dealt 1 damage prior by Frozen Fortress, my opponent attacks me with Stalwart Poro. During the showdown, my opponent plays Discipline and I chain with Stupefy. How does the combat resolve? Please explain the details.
To resolve this, we must first look at the state of your units and then the combat showdown chain.
Current State
- Sprite: Your Sprite is at the battlefield with 1 damage marked on it (from Frozen Fortress). It has 3 Might, meaning it is not yet killed (lethal damage is 3).
- Stalwart Poro: As a defender, it gains +1 Might from its Shield keyword, giving it 3 Might total.
Showdown Chain Resolution
Your opponent attacks with Stalwart Poro and plays Discipline (+2 Might). You react with Stupefy (-1 Might).
The Chain (LIFO - Last-In, First-Out):
- Top of Chain: Stupefy (yours)
- Bottom of Chain: Discipline (opponent's)
Sequence:
- Resolution of Stupefy: The spell resolves. Stalwart Poro receives -1 Might. It drops from 3 Might to 2 Might. You draw 1 card.
- Resolution of Discipline: The spell resolves. Stalwart Poro receives +2 Might. It increases from 2 Might to 4 Might. Your opponent draws 1 card.
Note: Even though you reduced its Might, the opponent’s Discipline resolves after your Stupefy, so the Poro ends the chain with a higher Might value.
Combat Resolution
After the chain is empty and both players pass, combat resolves in the following steps:
- Combat Damage Step:
- Stalwart Poro (4 Might) deals 4 damage to your Sprite (3 Might).
- Sprite (3 Might) deals 3 damage to Stalwart Poro (4 Might).
- Combat Cleanup:
- Your Sprite now has 1 damage (from Frozen Fortress) + 4 damage (from Stalwart Poro) = 5 total damage. Since 5 is greater than its 3 Might, your Sprite is killed and sent to your Trash.
- Stalwart Poro has 3 damage marked on it. Since its current Might is 4, it survives with 3 damage marked.
- Result: Your Sprite is gone. If no other units remain, your opponent has won the showdown.
