What is Burnout?
Burn Out is what happens when you try to take cards from your Main Deck but there aren't enough left (Rule 431). It's a replacement effect — you recycle your trash into your deck, give an opponent 1 point, and then finish the action.
How it works step-by-step:
- You attempt the action (draw, mill, etc.) and do as much as possible.
- You recycle your entire trash into your Main Deck and randomize it.
- You choose an opponent to gain 1 point.
- You complete the rest of the action (e.g., draw the remaining cards).
Key points:
- Burn Out also triggers during the Draw Phase — if your deck is empty when you need to draw, you Burn Out and still draw 1 (Rule 315.4.b).
- If your trash is also empty, you Burn Out, give a point, and fail to draw. If the game makes you try again, you'll Burn Out repeatedly, giving a point each time — until an opponent hits the Victory Score and wins immediately without waiting for cleanup (Rule 431.3).
- Looking at or revealing cards from an empty deck does not cause Burn Out — you just look at/reveal as many as possible and continue (Rule 431.1.c).
- Burn Out is a Limited Action (only happens when game effects direct it) and is a Replacement Effect (Rule 431.4–431.5).
