If I play Cleave on my unit and conquer a contested battlefield, can I react with Deathgrip to transfer the +3 Might from Cleave's Assault before combat ends?
Ruling: Only if a conquer trigger creates a chain. Deathgrip is Reaction timing and requires a chain to be played. Without a trigger (like Vi Legend Piltover Enforcer's conquer ability), there is no chain between conquering and combat ending, so you cannot play Deathgrip in time.
Sequence:
- Combat resolves, you establish control and gain the conquer point immediately
- If a conquer trigger exists (e.g., Piltover Enforcer with 3+ excess damage), it goes on the chain as a Pending Item
- You can now react with Deathgrip while your unit still has the Attacker designation
- Deathgrip resolves, transferring the full Might including Assault's +3
- Combat ends, removing Attacker/Defender designations
Nuances:
- Assault 3 grants +3 Might "while I am an attacker." The Attacker designation persists until combat ends, which happens after conquer triggers are placed on the chain.
- Without any conquer trigger to create a chain, combat ends immediately after conquering, removing the Attacker designation before you can play Deathgrip.
- The conquer point is gained immediately when you establish control, before any triggers go on the chain, so killing your unit afterward doesn't affect the point.
