How does Xerath, Freed interact during combat/Showdowns? Specifically: What is the priority and resolution order for its ability on the Chain? Can Xerath use its ability when the opponent initiates a Showdown/attacks into the battlefield? After using its ability, can Xerath still participate in combat and deal combat damage, or does the ability exhaust/prevent it from fighting?
Xerath, Freed's ability is an activated ability with no Action or Reaction keyword — that determines everything here.
1. Chain/priority order. Xerath's ability can only be activated on your own turn, in a Main Phase Open State (empty chain), and not during a Showdown (Rules 145.2, 381). When you activate it: pay the [C] and exhaust Xerath, choose the target, and the ability is added to the Chain as a Pending Item (Rule 401.1). Since you control the newest item, you get first priority to add Reactions; your opponent can respond with Reactions; then the ability resolves (newest item first). After the Chain empties, the turn returns to Neutral Open and priority goes to the turn player. If the 3 damage kills the target, its Deathknell triggers on that resolution.
2. During an opponent-initiated Showdown. No. Activated abilities need Action or Reaction to be "legally timed" during a Showdown, and Xerath's lacks both. It also defaults to the controlling player's turn (Rule 381), so when the opponent attacks into your battlefield, you cannot use it (FAQ #9157, #9933).
3. After using the ability. Yes, Xerath can still fight. Exhaustion only prevents it from being exhausted again as a cost — it doesn't stop it from dealing or taking combat damage, which uses current Might (Rules 465.2, 423.1.b; FAQ #6151). The practical catch: since Standard Move costs exhaust (Rule 144.2), an exhausted Xerath can't move itself to initiate an attack. But if it's already at the battlefield when combat breaks out (e.g., the opponent moves in), it defends and contributes its full 5 Might.
