If a card returns my spell (defy) to my hand, can I use it again in the same chain, or does the whole chain have to resolve first?
Yes, you can use the Defy again in the same chain if it is returned to your hand. You do not have to wait for the entire chain to resolve.
In Riftbound, the chain is not a single, immutable block that must resolve all at once. Instead, it is a sequence of items that resolve one by one. After each item on the chain resolves, players receive a window of priority to add new reactions to the chain before the next item resolves.
How it works:
- Chain Resolution: When an effect (like a spell or ability) resolves and returns your Defy from the chain to your hand, that effect finishes resolving completely.
- Priority Window: Once that effect is finished, the chain is still active (assuming there are other items remaining on it). Because the chain is not empty, the game enters a state where players have the opportunity to play new reactions.
- Re-casting: Since Defy is a [Reaction] spell, you can play it from your hand as soon as you receive priority, even while other spells are still waiting on the chain to resolve.
Sequence Example:
- Chain: [Spell A] -> [Spell B (Effect: Return target spell to hand)]
- Resolution: [Spell B] resolves, returning your Defy to your hand.
- Priority: The chain now only contains [Spell A]. Before [Spell A] resolves, both players get priority.
- Action: You can now cast the Defy you just received back into your hand to counter [Spell A].
Important Note: This is possible because Defy is a [Reaction] spell. You can only add new items to the chain during these priority windows if you have a card with [Reaction] speed or if it is your turn and the state is "Open" (meaning the chain is empty). Since you are adding to an existing chain, you must use a [Reaction] card.
