When playing Long Sword, do I need to pay the equip price the first time since it has quick draw?
When you play a card with Quick-Draw from your hand, you do not need to pay its Equip cost for the initial attachment.
According to the Quick-Draw keyword (Rule 745.1.d) and related FAQs:
- Play Cost: You must pay the Energy and Power costs printed in the top-left corner of the card to play it from your hand.
- Triggered Attachment: Because the card has Quick-Draw, it gains the triggered ability: "When you play this, attach it to a Unit you control." This ability attaches the equipment for free as part of playing the card.
- No Equip Cost: You bypass the Equip cost entirely for this initial attachment.
Summary of the sequence:
- Pay the play cost: You pay the Energy and Power costs required to play the card.
- Enter play: The equipment enters the battlefield.
- Quick-Draw triggers: The triggered ability resolves, and you attach the equipment to a unit you control for free.
You only pay the Equip cost listed in the card's text box if the equipment becomes unattached later and you choose to use the standard Equip activated ability to attach it to a different unit.
Note: I could not fully verify this ruling against the retrieved rules.
