Layers are the ordered system that decides how effects modify a card's traits, abilities, and numbers (CR 474–480). They apply top to bottom, then loop until nothing changes.
- Trait-Altering — changes what a card is: Name, Supertype, Type, Tags, Controller, Cost, Domain, copy effects, and "Might becomes X" settings.
- Ability-Altering — changes what a card does: granting/removing keywords, passive abilities, or rules text (including attached Gear text).
- Arithmetic — the plain +/− math: Might, Energy Cost, Power Cost. Increases apply before decreases.
Because layers loop, a Layer 3 buff can enable a Layer 2 keyword — e.g., Fiora, Victorious gains her keywords only after her Might buff pushes her past "Mighty" (CR 476.3). Within one layer, dependent effects resolve dependencies first; otherwise timestamp order (CR 478–480).
